What Is Chained Beast?

Chained Beast is a free online monster game you play right here in your browser. You are not the hero with a sword. You are the beast: a huge wolf-like monster chained to a wooden stake in the middle of a village square, and the villagers want you gone. Pitchforks, spears, nets and shields close in from every side. Your only weapon is the heavy iron chain on your collar.

There is no attack button in Chained Beast. You move, and the chain follows you with real physics. Run in a wide arc and the chain sweeps across the square. Turn hard and it cracks like a whip. Sprint to the end of the leash and it snaps tight with a shockwave. Every hunter you hit at speed goes flying, and every hunter you fling scores a point.

A full run takes about five to seven minutes, so it is perfect for a quick break. It is a 3D game, but it is light: it loads in seconds on a laptop, a Chromebook, a desktop PC, an iPhone, an iPad or an Android phone. Nothing to install, no account, no payment. Press Play Free above and you are in the arena.

18 seconds of Chained Beast gameplay: whipping the chain through a wave of villagers and landing a Tension Strike.

How to Play in 30 Seconds

  1. Run. Your beast runs toward your mouse cursor, follows the WASD or arrow keys, or follows your finger when you drag on a phone. The further you point, the faster you run.
  2. Whip. The chain trails behind you. When a part of it moves fast enough it glows gold. A glowing chain throws hunters across the square; a slow chain only trips them.
  3. Snap. Sprint straight to the end of your chain to trigger a Tension Strike: the chain locks straight and blasts everything between the stake and your beast.
  4. Survive. Clear 7 waves of hunters. After each wave you pick 1 of 3 upgrades and recover 2 health.
  5. Break free. Beat the Beast Hunter three times. Each win loosens the stake. After the third, you rip it out of the ground and swing it as a flail for a 25-second rampage.

Controls

Chained Beast has exactly one control: movement. There is no attack button, no jump and no dodge key. How you move decides how the chain moves, and the chain does all the damage.

Mouse

Move the cursor over the game. Your beast runs toward the point under the cursor. The further the cursor is from the beast, the faster it runs; about three metres away is full sprint. Keep the cursor beyond the white ring to sprint into the end of the chain.

Keyboard

Use W A S D or the arrow keys. Keyboard movement is always full speed, which makes Tension Strikes easy: just hold a direction toward the ring. Press Esc or P to pause, and 1, 2 or 3 to pick an upgrade card.

Touch (Phone and Tablet)

Put your thumb anywhere on the game and drag. A joystick appears where you first touched. A short drag walks; a drag past about 70% of the ring sprints. Lift your thumb to stop. The game box does not scroll the page while you play, and the fullscreen button in the bottom-right corner gives you the whole screen.

Your Chain Is Your Only Weapon

Most monster games give you claws and a bite button. Chained Beast takes that away and gives you something more interesting: a 16-link physics chain that is anchored to a stake on one end and to your collar on the other. The chain can lie slack on the cobblestones, drag behind you, wrap around your path and whip forward when you change direction. Learning how it moves is the whole game.

A fast chain glows gold: every hunter it touches is thrown across the square.

Trip or Throw

Every link checks its own speed. A slow link that brushes a hunter trips them for half a second. A fast link, one that glows gold, throws them through the air. Thrown hunters are out of the fight and count toward your score. Big sweeping circles keep the outer part of the chain fast; sharp turns at full speed create the fastest whip of all.

The Tension Strike

The ring on the ground shows exactly how far your chain reaches. Sprint straight at that ring at full speed and the chain snaps straight. A shockwave runs from the stake to your beast, and a burst around your beast reaches 2.5 metres past it. Everything in that line flies, shields or not. The cost: your beast is yanked back and slowed for a moment, and the strike needs 1.5 seconds to recharge. Aimed well, one strike clears a whole crowd. Wasted, it leaves you stuck in the middle of one.

Bowling

A flying hunter is a weapon too. When a thrown body lands in a group, it knocks the others down. Chain reactions are where big scores come from.

Reading the Chain

The chain is made of 16 physical links at the start (6 metres), and it grows to 20 and then 25 links as the stake loosens. Each link has its own position and speed. The links only pull when the chain is stretched, so a chain can lie slack, drag behind you, or swing out wide when you turn.

Two movements make the fastest chain. The first is a wide circle near the edge of your ring: the outer links travel the furthest and move fastest. The second is a hard turn at full sprint: the chain keeps going in the old direction and cracks around like a whip.

Health and Damage

Your beast starts with 10 health, shown as hearts in the top-left corner (each heart is 2 health). Villagers and shieldbearers deal 1 damage, spears deal 2 and the boss deals 2. Before a hunter hits, he flashes red for half a second, so you always have time to move or whip him away. After a hit you are safe for 0.6 seconds. At most three hunters can wind up an attack on you at the same time. Clearing a wave heals 2 health, and the Thick Hide upgrade raises your maximum.

Meet the Hunters

The village sends five kinds of enemies. Each one is built to punish a lazy strategy, so you can never just run in circles and win.

The Beast Hunter Boss

The Beast Hunter arrives on waves 3, 5 and 7. Normal whips bounce off him. He walks toward you and grabs your chain when he gets close to it, and a bar appears at the top of the screen.

The Beast Hunter grabs your chain. Hold away from him until the bar fills.
  1. Pull away. Hold your movement directly away from him. The bar fills in about 3 seconds (a little longer each time you meet him). Stop pulling and it drains.
  2. Do not give up. If you go 4 seconds without pulling, he drags you 3 metres toward him and bites for 2 damage.
  3. Punish. When the bar fills he stumbles and flashes yellow, stunned for 4 seconds. Hit him with the chain, a Tension Strike or a sprinting ram. Each hard hit lights one of the three pips under the wave counter.

Villagers keep coming during the fight, and your chain still hurts them while you tug. When the boss falls, the remaining hunters run away and the wave ends.

Waves and Upgrades

Hunters arrive in three groups per wave, five seconds apart. Red arrows at the edge of the square show where the next group will come from. A wave ends when every hunter is down.

212 villagers, 1 spearman
3Beast Hunter + villagers
4Villagers, netters and a spearman
5Beast Hunter + villagers, shieldbearers and spearmen

After each wave you heal 2 and choose 1 of 3 upgrade cards: Spiked Links, Longer Chain, Iron Links, Thick Hide, Bowling and Quick Paws. Each card stacks up to three times. After each boss your chain grows by about 25% on top of any Longer Chain cards.

Upgrade Cards

After every wave you choose one of three upgrade cards. Each card can be taken up to three times, so every run builds a different beast.

The Rampage Finale

Beat the Beast Hunter the third time and the stake breaks. Now the stake is on the far end of your chain: a heavy wooden flail. For 25 seconds the hunters panic and run, the camera follows you across the square, and every swing of the stake flings anyone it touches. This is where record scores are made.

Score and Daily Challenge

Your score is the number of hunters you fling, boss included. Tripped hunters do not count until they are thrown. Your best normal score and your best score for each daily challenge are stored in your browser. The daily challenge uses the same random seed for everyone on the same UTC day, so the waves and the upgrade offers are identical for every player.

The Daily challenge button starts a run where every player in the world gets the same waves and the same upgrade offers for that day. Finish, tap Share score and send your result to a friend: same day, same hunters, who flings more? A new daily run unlocks at midnight UTC, and your best daily score is saved in your browser.

Chained Beast Tips and Strategy

Fifteen tips to survive all 7 waves, beat the Beast Hunter and set a high score. Read one, try it in the game above, come back for the next.

1. Never Stop Moving

The chain only hurts when it moves. A beast standing still is a beast without a weapon, and hunters surround it in seconds. Even when nothing is near you, keep a slow loop going so the chain is ready.

2. Ride the Edge of the Ring

The outer links of the chain move fastest. Circling close to the white ring keeps most of the chain glowing gold, which throws instead of trips. Circling close to the stake makes a short, slow chain that only trips.

3. Turn Hard to Crack the Whip

A sharp change of direction at full speed is the strongest normal attack in the game. The chain keeps travelling the old way, then swings around fast. When three or four villagers stand in a line, run past them and turn back hard.

4. Change Direction Every Few Laps

Hunters walk toward where you are, so running the same circle forever makes them bunch up on one side. Reverse direction and your chain sweeps straight through the bunch.

5. Line Up the Crowd First

The Tension Strike hits along the whole chain from the stake to you, plus a burst around your beast. Before you sprint for the ring, move so the crowd sits between the stake and the edge. One snap can throw ten hunters.

6. Use It to Reach Spearmen

Spearmen stand about two metres outside your ring, where the chain cannot reach. The Tension Strike burst reaches 2.5 metres past your beast, so sprint at the ring right in front of a spearman to knock him flat.

7. Respect the Cooldown

After a strike your beast is yanked back and slowed, and the ring turns grey for 1.5 seconds. Do not strike into the middle of a crowd that the shockwave will not clear: you will be slow in the worst possible place.

8. Read the Red Flash

Every melee hunter flashes red for half a second before he hits. That is your signal to run or to whip him away. If several are flashing, sprint out instead of fighting; only three can wind up at once, but three hits still hurt.

9. Sidestep the Red Line

A spear throw is telegraphed by a red line on the ground. Spears fly straight, so one step sideways is enough. Then punish the spearman with a strike or by flinging a villager into him.

10. Rip Nets Immediately

A net pins the middle of your chain and your reach shrinks to the second half. Sprint straight away from the net for one second and it tears free. Do it right away: a small circle with a shieldbearer next to you is how runs end.

11. Get Behind Shields

Shieldbearers block whips that come at their shield. Circle around them so the chain hits their back, or save a Tension Strike for groups that include two or three of them.

12. Pull Straight Away, Not Sideways

The tug of war only fills when your movement points away from the boss. On touch screens, drag your thumb to the edge of the joystick ring in the exact opposite direction. On keyboard, hold the key that points away from him. If the bar drains, you are aiming sideways.

Once he is stunned and flashing yellow you have four seconds. The fastest hit is a Tension Strike: sprint for the ring on the side where he stands. A hard whip turn right next to him works too. Three stuns and he is gone; the rest of the wave runs away.

13. Farm the Rampage

The 25-second rampage after the third boss is worth more points than any wave. The stake becomes a flail on the end of your chain. Run in big loops through the fleeing villagers so the stake swings wide, and steer toward the walls where they get trapped.

14. Stack Bowling and Iron Links for Chains

With both cards, one flung villager can knock down four more. Fling into groups, not into empty space.

15. Play the Daily Challenge Twice

The daily run has the same waves and the same card offers every time you play it that day. Your first attempt shows you where the groups come from; your second attempt can be planned around it.

Best Upgrades

There is no single best build, but some cards are stronger early and others late.

CardWhen to take itWhy
Spiked LinksEarly, waves 1–3More of the chain throws instead of trips; the biggest jump in kills
Quick PawsEarly or midFaster running means faster chain and easier Tension Strikes
Thick HideWhen below half health before a bossThe only card that heals; one copy usually saves a run
BowlingMid, waves 3–5Crowds get bigger later, so chain reactions pay off more
Longer ChainAny timeMore reach and a wider sweep; stacks with the boss growth
Iron LinksLateFlung bodies travel further, which feeds Bowling and the finale

A Different Kind of Monster Game

If you like arena survival games, roguelite runs or physics games, Chained Beast gives you something you have not played before. You are the monster, you play alone, and the whole game is built around one physical object: the chain. There are no menus to grind, no energy timers and no loot boxes. Every run starts the same way, a beast on a stake, and ends with you either broken by the hunters or tearing the stake out of the ground.

It is also made for the web. The page loads fast, the game box never jumps around while you play, and the game works on old laptops and new phones alike. If your device struggles, the game lowers its resolution automatically to stay smooth.
